Keep your laptop, tablet or e-reader safe in style with this upcycled project. As long as you’ve got the dimensions of the device, you can start making these for your family and friends too. Project and photography by The Owl and the Accordion.

MATERIALS
Two pillowcases (they can either
be matching or different, whichever you prefer)
Wadding
Extra fabric for the fastening flap (we used a vintage doily)

EQUIPMENT
A button or snap fastener
Sharp scissors
Tailor’s chalk
Pins
A sewing machine
An iron

STEP ONE To make things really easy, you need to make sure that your pillowcase is only slightly wider than your laptop – this means that you’ll be able to work with the existing seams, and save material for a future project. The great thing about vintage pillowcases is that they come in a huge range of sizes, varying from pretty small to large enough to fit a 43cm laptop inside.

STEP TWO Lay one pillowcase on a flat surface, then place your laptop on top. Mark where it comes to, then add 2.5cm or so for hemming. Draw a line across, then cut.

STEP THREE Turn your pillowcase inside out, then fold the top edge over and iron in place. Repeat the process, so there is a double hem across the top. This forms the outer section of the laptop sleeve.

STEP FOUR Take your second pillowcase, and cut across the top so it’s exactly the same size as the first one – you won’t need to add any seam allowances, as it’s going to be tucked under the top hem of the outer section. This forms the inner section of the laptop sleeve.

STEP FIVE Decide how much wadding you want to include – we layered three pieces, so it had quite a good amount of padding, but you can use more or less as you like. Your pieces of wadding need to be the same width and double the height of the inner section of the sleeve, as they will need to cover both sides. Measure, then cut out.

STEP SIX This is the tricky part – you need to layer all the pieces together, then pin in place ready for sewing. The order should be:

The outer section of the sleeve (inside out)

The pieces of wadding

The inner section of the sleeve (in the right way)

It can be fiddly to squeeze everything in together, but don’t worry too much – once it’s stitched and turned in the right way, it’ll flatten out. Once you’ve sandwiched everything together, you need to tuck the inner section and the wadding under the hem of the outer section and pin in place – this creates a nice neat edge, and will make sure everything stays where it should.

STEP SEVEN Stitch carefully around the top, then fasten off.

STEP EIGHT You now need to attach the fastening flap – we used a doily, but you could use anything from other fabric to vintage ribbons or lace. Either stitch in place by hand, or use fabric glue to stick it down, then stitch the button on the other side.
